On Monday 11 March 2002 St Mary's was the host to 120 children from 30 schools in the London area as part of a Youth Sports Trust initiative. Some 25 Sport Science students delivered a variety of workshops, which provided the pupils with the necessary skills to host mini festivals of sport for their primary feeder schools.
This whole initiative has been developed by the Youth
Sport Trust in an attempt to provide the opportunity for schools to introduce
the leadership strand into the Key Stage 4 PE curriculum. PE and sport
have a valuable contribution to play in developing young people as leaders
and subsequently as active citizens.
Fifteen other Higher Education institutions around the
country also took part in this project with St Mary's being the only London
institution. Our students did an excellent job and were professional throughout;
evaluations revealed that the pupils really enjoyed the day and found
the workshops stimulating and useful.
Whilst the event involved contributions from many areas
of the college I wish to acknowledge the hard work and commitment of Jenny
Lloyd of the Sport Science programme team in organising this event.
