Entering Higher Education for Dyslexic Learners

On March 13th a half-day conference was held for dyslexic learners who might be considering studying in Higher Education. It was run by the dyslexia co-ordinators from St Mary's, Kingston University and Roehampton University of Surrey. It was funded by the Widening Participation Initiative.

Approximately sixty delegates attended, mainly 6th form and FE students with some of their staff.

The day started with lunch and small groups of delegates were looked after by mentors, all dyslexic students from the three institutions. This was followed by three short talks on Studying at University (Pat Culshaw), The Disabled Students' Allowance (Anne Butterfield from Kingston) and Do Your Research and Asking the Right Questions (Rob Fidler from Roehampton).

The tea break allowed the visitors to ask their mentors questions and visit the computers which were set up with specialist programs suitable for dyslexic learners. A final question and answer session rounded off the day.

The feedback from the event has been very positive so far and the day proved to be a good example of collaboration in the truest sense.

Thanks go to our mentors who were brilliant with their respective groups and also Sam Szepel-Lukowska from Recruitment who set up a stall with St Mary's information.
