St Mary's average grade in the 2001 RAE is 3a which is a two-point leap from the 1996 RAE. Theology and Religious Studies has moved from 1 to 3b. The European Studies entry was new, bringing together elements of our previous submissions in Sociology and English. History has maintained its position since 1996. English has moved two grades from 3b to 4. The description of 4 is:
"quality that equates to attainable levels of national excellence in virtually all of the research activity submitted, showing some evidence of national excellence."
