A person is a person through other persons (ubuntu). A person with ubuntu is open to others, and shares what they have. Sister Delia Smith is such a person.
Dee left St Mary's in 1975. After working as a VMM volunteer in Kenya , she became Deputy Head at Namwela Secondary school and later at Kolanya. In 1984 she began an education project in East Pokot . Within five years, she had trained 65 teachers, designed a local needs-based curriculum and had supervised the construction of fifteen schools.
In 1989 Dee joined the Maryknoll Sisters. After training as a HIV educator, two years of theological studies prepared her for mission. Language classes followed in Bolivia and she then settled in Guatemala where she started Proyecto Vida (Project Life).
Proyecto Vida provides AIDS education and diagnostic and community services for people living with HIV. A hospice at Coatepeque, opened in August 2005.
Dee is currently President of the Guatemala National AIDS Coalition and of the country's Co-ordinating Mechanism for the Global Fund for AIDS.
