Big Day on Campus

Graduation January 2007St Mary's University College, Twickenham, this weekend welcomed back hundreds of students from all over the country, supported by their families and friends, for a series of Award Ceremonies held at their Strawberry Hill campus.

Higher Degrees, Postgraduate Certificates in Education and First Degrees were conferred on postgraduates and graduates.

The ceremonies, held in the impressive College Chapel, came at the end of a week of celebration following the Privy Council's decision to award the Title St Mary's University College, Twickenham , to the College.

Dr. Arthur Naylor, Principal, described the day as "excellent". He paid tribute to the tremendous hard work shown by both students and a dedicated staff team.

The day started with the award of two Doctorates of Philosophy (under the auspices of the University of Surrey) to Brian Docherty and Ian Terry.

The School of Communication, Culture and Creative Arts then honoured Master of Arts students in Applied Linguistics and English Language Teaching and in Theatre Directing . Nadja Richartz received a Postgraduate Certificate in Applied Linguistics and English Language Teaching.

The School of Education was out in force to congratulate a large number of recipients of Master of Arts in Education (Continuing Professional Development) as well as James Furse, who received a Postgraduate Certificate in the same.

The University College continues to excel in its reputation as a provider of quality newly qualified school teachers .

The presentation of a large number of graduates with Postgraduate Certificates in Education (Primary Age Phase) then followed.

Later in the afternoon, many more graduates were presented with their Postgraduate Certificates in Education (Secondary Age Phase) by Dr.Naylor.

The number of different Masters Programmes now available in the School of Theology Philosophy and History continues to increase and there were Masters' awards in the areas of Bioethics , Catholic School Leadership , Pastoral Theology and Religious History along with numerous recipients of Postgraduate Certificates in the same.

Eleanor Crean received a Postgraduate Certificate in Chaplaincy Studies .

Masters degrees from the School of Human Sciences in Health , Nutrition and Physical Activity and in Sport Performance were then conferred before new graduates came forward to receive their BAs and BScs from the School.

The first ever students to receive the Foundation Degree in Child and Youth Studies and also in Education in Context then came forward whilst Alistair Barnston and Adrian Smith received Foundation Degrees in Sport, Health and Exercise Science at the ceremony.

"The campus was buzzing both with a real sense of personal, human achievement but also with the College's ethos as a place where living and working together is at the forefront of what this community is about," said Rob Marshall, Director of Marketing. .
