Success at the 16th World University Cross Country Championships

Andy Vernon

Students from St Mary’s University College, Twickenham ran in the 16th World University Cross Country Championships that took place in Mauquenchy, Northern France on April 6th.

In muddy and difficult conditions Faye Fullerton took the lead with just 200 metres to go, winning the individual gold and securing victory for the Team GB women’s team.  With her individual and team medal Faye now has three World University Cross Country gold medals, having already secured a 1st place with the victorious women’s team in the 2004 Championship.

Andy Vernon (6th place) and Keith Gerrard (14th place) were the first two finishers for the men’s team, having completed a 10.8km course in driving snow.  The Team GB men’s team packed well enough to ensure a silver medal behind the hosts France.

Andrew Reid-Smith, Director of Sport at St Mary’s University College, said, "This was an excellent result for Team GB with the women winning their 3rd title in a row.  Earlier this year at Swansea, St Mary’s won the BUSA cross country title with Andy and Keith finishing 1st and 2nd respectively, and the strength of the university college squad was reflected in selection for the World University Cross Country Championships.

"Faye has consistently made a winning contribution when selected for this competition and this year was no different; she has an outstanding record and should be congratulated on the way she has represented St Mary’s University College."
