Stephanie Twell Wins in Antrim

Steph TwellSt Mary’s student and sports scholar Steph Twell followed up her record breaking third successive European Junior Cross Country title with a win in the IAAF Antrim Cross Country meeting at Greenmount.

The meeting is a part of the UK Cross Challenge Series and is one of the most prestigious events in the UK with previous winners including British legends Paula Radcliffe and Liz McColgan.

Now competing in the senior ranks, 19 year old Stephanie has already won two events earlier in the series at Gateshead and Liverpool.  Steph ran strongly in Antrim to open up a gap of 20 metres on the final lap and kept her head to power away from Ireland’s Deidre Byrne in the run to the line, winning in 18.25 on the 5.6k course.

Andrew Reid-Smith, Director of Sport at St Mary's said: “Steph has had an incredible year, winning the World Junior 1500m gold, defending her European Junior Cross Country title and competing in the 1500m at the Beijing Olympics.  She is a talented athlete who really enjoys her sport and works exceptionally hard with her coach, Mick Woods, to gain success.  We are very proud of her achievements and the University College wishes Steph every success for the future.”
