Tough Guys Compete

Staff from the School of Sport, Health and Applied Science and students from Sport Rehabilitation are competing in an event called Tough Guy in rural Staffordshire this Sunday 1st February.

Thousands of people from all over the world take on 8-10 miles of cross country running, mud, obstacles, flaming hay bales, electric fences, ice cold water filled tunnels, walking the plank and much, much more. This event goes ahead whatever the weather!

Staff and students hope to raise at least £500 for 'The Knight Centre for Cystic Fibrosis', which is the specialist CF centre at Frimley Park Hospital in Surrey.

Lecturer Rik Mellor, a veteran of three Tough Guy events, said today: “I’m happy to have found some like minded staff members in Rob Lake and Rich Blagrove and I’m more than proud of the Sport Rehab students who are clearly quite tough. We’ve been having 7am training sessions fortnightly since November where we run to Teddington Lock, usually take a jump into the river and then onto some hills, logs, crawling and clambering in Richmond park for 60-90 minutes.

He added: “We’re all pleased to represent St Mary’s at such a high profile event and Team Simms Tough Guy is looking to raise a good few hundred pounds for charity whilst dressed as women so please take a look at our pages and donate as much as you can.”
