International Women’s Day Celebrated

IWD 2009This year staff and students celebrated International Women’s Day for the second year running. As the official celebration of International Women’s Day (8th March) fell on a Sunday this year, the University College’s celebration was organised around the weekend.

An art workshop exploring body image and paint took place on Friday 6th March. Year 3 teacher training art specialists led the workshop ’Exploring Body Image and Paint’.

On Monday 9th March Professor Lisa Isherwood gave a lecture entitled ‘The Fat Jesus: Feminist Explorations in Boundaries and Transgressions’. The lecture was followed by drinks. Professor Lisa Isherwood is professor of Feminist Liberation Theologies at the University of Winchester.

IWD 2009Both events were open to everyone.

Marije Altorf, one of the organisers, said before the event: ”International Women’s Day both celebrates the achievements of women and raises awareness of persisting gender inequalities, which affect the lives of women and men.”

“This year’s celebration has the timely topic of the body. A group of staff and students have created a very good programme and we hope many people will attend the events,” she added.
