Women's Basketball Team Heading to Final

The women’s basketball team at St Mary’s University College, Twickenham battled in a tough British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Trophy semi-final away match at Cardiff University last Wednesday, and came out over-riding winners 92-65.  This victory puts the team in poll position to win the prestigious BUCS Trophy, when they play the University of Wolverhampton 1st team this Saturday 14th March at the BUCS championships in Sheffield.

During the regular season, St Mary’s University College finished 2nd place in Division 1A of the BUCS South East league, with 8 wins and 2 losses.  Despite finishing in second place, the final match of the season saw the team up against a Portsmouth side that were on a 20-match unbeaten run.  Playing away from home with a depleted team, St Mary’s University College won 62-56, a victory which gave them home-court advantage in the opening rounds of the BUCS Trophy competition.

In the last-16 match, St Mary’s beat Brunel University (62-35), the team which beat them by 1 point in the opening match of the season.  In the quarter finals, St Mary’s met Nottingham Trent, and came through victorious 56-48.

The semi-final victory away against the favourite Cardiff team prompted St Mary’s women’s basketball team head coach Dr Rob Lake to say, “I am so unbelievably proud of this team.  They have worked so incredibly hard this season, battling through adversity and showing real determination in tough situations.  The amount of improvement that I’ve witnessed from the whole team throughout the season has been remarkable, and this is down entirely to their supreme will-to-win, excellent work-ethic and general positive attitudes to training and improvement as a team.  Providing we play up to our usual level of intensity, I think we have a really good chance of success in Sheffield on Saturday”.

Victory on Saturday would cement the place of St. Mary’s women’s basketball as one of the best clubs in the country, continuing the legacy that has built steadily with increasing success over the last few years.
