St Mary’s University College and the BST Foundation (Brief Strategic Therapy & Clinical Hypnosis Foundation) have announced the launch of first Diploma of Higher Education in Clinical Hypnosis to be offered by an academic institution in the UK.
The primary aim behind this initiative is to address the growing serious public and government concerns of the lack of regulation and recognised professional educational standards for hypnotherapists in the UK. The main concern had been the lack of academic training, and the new Diploma marks a significant step in the recognition of hypnotherapy as a scientifically based therapeutic discipline.
St Mary’s and the BST Foundation’s two year, part-time course sets the gold standard for training in hypnotherapy. It combines practical, academic and vocational components to ensure therapists are appropriately, ethically, and professionally trained. Current practising hypnotherapists that are able to demonstrate the appropriate skills and knowledge are being offered the opportunity to complete the course in one year, and graduate with a recognised university based qualification.
Hypnotherapy is now commonly available within the NHS. Not only does the Diploma set a consistent standard of therapeutic excellence but, by setting a standard to look for when seeking hypnotherapy, will also serve as a starting point for safeguarding the general public.
