Irish Studies Students to Meet Former Irish PM

Undergraduates on the Irish Studies degree course at St Mary's University College, Twickenham, have been invited to meet the former Irish Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Bertie Ahern when he visits London later this month.

Mr Ahern, who was Irish leader for 10 years and a prime mover in the Northern Ireland peace process, is launching a lecture series entitled 'Ireland and Britain after 2010’ at the Hammersmith Irish Cultural Centre, West London. Mr Ahern will give the first lecture in a series examining the future of the peace process and Anglo-Irish relations after the next British general election.

St Mary's is only one of two British universities offering Irish Studies at degree level and in recognition of this its Irish Studies undergraduates have been invited to have a private audience with the former Irish Prime Minister to discuss the peace process and other aspects of contemporary Anglo-Irish politics.

The meeting with Bertie Ahern takes place at 6.30pm on Wednesday 22 April with Mr Ahern's inaugural lecture (open to the public; admission free) commencing at 7.30.
