Mary Kenny to Visit St Mary's

Renowned author, journalist and broadcaster Mary Kenny will visit St Mary's University College, Twickenham on Friday 8th May.

Mary will be a guest speaker on the Irish Studies Modern Irish History module and will be speaking to third year undergraduates about her time as a founder member of the Irish feminist movement in Dublin in the 1970s.

Mary has worked as a journalist on the Evening Standard, Irish Independent, Spectator and Catholic Herald. She has a special interest in the relationship between England and Ireland, which she explored in her biography of William Joyce, Lord Haw-Haw entitled 'Germany Calling' and more specifically in her play 'Allegiance' which examined the quixotic relationship between Winston Churchill and IRA leader Michael Collins in the 1920s. She is author of ‘Goodbye to Catholic Ireland', William Trevor’s ‘Book of the Year’ in the Sunday Times.

Her new book 'Crown and Shamrock: Love and Hate between Ireland and the British Monarchy' analyses the ambivalent relationship between the Irish public and British royalty and is published in May.

St Mary's is only one of two universities in Britain offering a degree level qualification in Irish Studies and regularly attracts as guest speakers leading Irish academics, politicians and writers.
