Students from St Mary’s University College, Twickenham, volunteered at Search for an Asian Soccer Star, a three day initiative at Chelsea FC last weekend. Search for an Asian Soccer Star aims to unearth potential professional footballers from a so far under represented community at the top level of the sport.
The 500 plus Asian boys undertook a series of tests and coaching sessions overseen by volunteers from the Physical and Sport Education degree programme at St Mary’s. The students worked for 30 hours over the 3 days to help the event run smoothly and to identify any potential soccer stars.
Darren Grace, project manager said, “The event was a huge success. The volunteer students from St Mary's University College, Physical and Sport Education degree were fantastic. Not only did they give up their bank holiday weekend but their knowledge, excellence and initiative helped the event run smoothly. They interacted well with the players, parents and VIPs and were a real credit to the University College."
The highlight for two students was their kick around with Ray Wilkins and Florent Malouda during their lunch break. Jonathan Omisore, a third year Physical and Sport Education student, said “This has been a great way to spend my bank holiday. Not many people get to work in a world class environment or on an exciting project like this. I have learned new skills and have been able to apply the knowledge I have learnt from my degree programme to good effect. This experience has been great and I got to play keep ball with Ray Wilkins’.
