St Mary’s University College, Twickenham, is hosting the St Mary’s Classic, a prestigious UK Athletics Challenge series meeting on Wednesday 3rd June.
The meeting offers high quality competition opportunities for young and emerging elite performers so that they can gain valuable racing experience, improve their personal performances and try to achieve qualification times for major championships.
This event also showcases the Endurance Performance Centre at St Mary’s which has helped athletes including Andy Baddeley, Mo Farah and Steph Twell to become top performers on the world stage.
Last weekend Steph Twell won the British Universities and Colleges 5000m title with a new championship best performance of 16min 03.94 secs in very windy conditions. Fellow students Andy Vernon (1500m), Ben Lindsay (10,000m) and Tom Wade (steeplechase) all won medals to back up a splendid run from Steph Twell.
In the past the Classic has been visited by athletics legends such as Steve Cram, Kelly Holmes, Ian Stewart and Dave Bedford. Dave Bedford is a former student of St Mary’s and, through the London Marathon, has been very influential in the development of endurance running at the University College.
Professor Richard Fisher, Head of St Mary’s 2012 Preparations and Sport Strategy said, "The Classic started life in 2005 as the St Mary’s Relays on a relatively small scale and in only five years it has become one of the prestigious events in the UK Challenge series."
The change has proved to be a great success and this second St Mary’s Classic promises to be even better than last year. It is anticipated that there will be an evening of very high quality competition involving some of our best young talent and once again a visit from a Scottish team."
More information, including timetable (and, from 4th June, the results) can be found on the St Mary's Classic page.
