Choir Concert Announced

The St Mary’s University College Choir will be giving a concert of popular sacred and secular works on June 4th at 7.30pm in the University College chapel. The choir, consisting of students and staff under the direction of music lecturer Jane Purser, was formed in October 2007 in order to participate in the annual Church Colleges and Universities Choir Festival held in March 2008 in Liverpool’s Metropolitan Cathedral.

Following this experience, the choir was keen to build on their musical achievements and in March this year, travelled to York to sing in the festival (held in the inspiring Minster) along with twelve other university and college choirs.

The festivals have given the singers opportunities to perform major choral works (Poulenc’s Gloria accompanied by the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in 2008 and Tallis’s magnificent unaccompanied forty-part motet Spem in Alium this year) as well as showcase their own talents in individual choir performances.

The concert on June 4th is to be held in the University College Chapel at which the choir will perform a wide selection of popular sacred and secular pieces – to include works by Tallis, Purcell and Mozart as well as Rutter and Lloyd Webber.
