Former Student in Theatre Directing Debut

Andy Brunskill, a former student of St Mary’s University College, has his professional directing debut at The Orange Tree Theatre, next week in the British Premiere of Arthur Kopit’s Sing To Me Through Open Windows.

The play revolves around the character of Andrew – on the first day of spring each year he visits the isolated home of Ottoman Jud, a passe magician, and his helper, Loveless, who is dressed as a clown. When he gets there he is offered tea, conversation, magic and the opportunity to witness an impromptu circus act.

Written 50 years ago and not produced in the UK until now, this is a dream-like exploration into the loss of childhood magic and life’s transitions.

The Orange Tree Theatre’s trainee director scheme has been in operation since 1986 and has provided the first important step for many young directors who are now succeeding in various areas of British theatre.

They include Dominic Hill (Artistic Director at the Traverse in Edinburgh), Rachel Kavanaugh (Artistic Director at Birmingham Repertory Theatre), Timothy Sheader (Artistic Director at the Open Air Theatre, Regent's Park) and Sean Holmes (Lyric Hammersmith).
