Aquinas Centre Launched

The Aquinas centre was launched at St Mary’s University College, Twickenham, this week with a series of keynote events. The centre’s aim is to develop and share new knowledge and understanding in the realm of leadership and learning for the benefits of young people.

The fanfare for the launch was the opening lecture by the world renowned expert in Leadership and learning, Professor John West-Burnham entitled The Architecture of Leadership. Vice Principal, Dr Mary Eaton, was delighted to welcome not only academic staff from the University College but teachers engaged in Masters programmes, senior officers from Local Authorities and Diocese.

Dr Eaton said: "We have celebrated the launch of a significant venture for St Mary's University College.  The establishment of the Aquinas Centre will provide a focus and forum for work in the field of educational leadership and transformative change.  St Mary's has a long history of service to the educational community and this is continued in the opportunities for research and reflection, scholarship and development which will now be available to a wide range of practitioners."

Also this week, Principal Dr Arthur Naylor, launched the Aquinas Centre to an expanded audience from the previous day’s events. They took part in in-depth workshops with three experts in their fields Professor John West-Burnham was joined by Professor Paul Clarke and Dr Peter Tyler.

Colleagues were stimulated by themes as diverse as Moral Leadership, Developing sustainable communities and Spirituality and reflection. These themes herald the key areas of activity of the Aquinas Centre and will have direct benefits for educationalists and young people.

The conference also included an inspiring and thought provoking evening lecture by Professor Paul Clarke on A practical guide to Radical Transition: Framing a Sustainable Learning Community to an audience of over 100 MA students and academic staff.
