Dr Merylann J Shuttloffel with CSL staff

American Academic Visits

At a recent Saturday School Dr Merylann J Shuttloffel, Director of the Catholic Education Leadership & Policy Study Programmes at the Catholic University of America, visited St Mary’s University College, Twickenham as part of her sabattical programme.

Dr Schuttloffel is spending her sabbatical term researching the extent to which Catholic ethos is being maintained in Primary schools across Europe. She had been invited by John Lydon to address our students in April last during the NCEA Convention in Anaheim California where John was delivering a lecture of the maintenance of distinctive religious charisms in the 21st century.

Having been introduced to students, numbering twenty on the day and including Primary and Secondary headteachers, Dr Shuttloffel spoke about the contrasting Catholic education system in the USA – where there is no official state funding - and the challenges this presents, particularly in the context of the Church’s 'preferential option for the poor'.

Dr Schuttloffel concluded by suggesting several publications which will prove useful when the students embark upon their dissertations. Everyone present, including the three members of the CSL programme, found the engagement with Dr Schuttloffel’s international perspective to be particularly fruitful.

St Mary’s University College continues to develop links with the Catholic University of America as part of its international development and overseas student recruitment programme.
