Sixteen new players from the Harlequins Rugby League Academy visited the Nutrition Lab in the School of Sport, Health and Applied Science at St Mary’s University College, Twickenham last week.
The players found out about food preparation methods, taking into account how appropriate choices would help to optimise their training and performance. Each of the players was given the opportunity to prepare, cook and taste a suitable breakfast, lunch, dinner as well as prepare suitable recovery snacks. The players experimented with different ingredients to make their own individualised, energy-rich smoothie.
The aim of the session was to educate the players on how, why and what to prepare and cook for themselves on a daily basis. This included how to improve the carbohydrate part of their diet and the ideal time to refuel after training, how and when to include more protein in their diet using everyday cost effective foods and when and why fruit and vegetables can add variety and much needed vitamins and minerals to their diet.
