International Philosophy Students Visit St Mary’s

Students from Amsterdam’s Free University visited St Mary’s University College, Twickenham on Wednesday 13th January. Along with undergraduates from the Philosophy programme at St Mary’s, the students took part in a series of philosophical workshops, lectures and seminars on campus.

The initiative for the exchange was that of Dr Mariette Willesman, lecturer of Modern Philosophy in Amsterdam. Dr Willesman said: "At the Free University in Amsterdam there is a great interest in providing students with the experience of studying in an international context. This day spent at St Mary’s University College provided an excellent opportunity for them."

The visit saw students learning how to write philosophical articles for journals, newspapers and websites. Dr Marije Martijn, a lecturer in Ancient Philosophy from Amsterdam, led a workshop on Philosophy and Genre, encouraging the students to discuss the importance of philosophical argument.

St Mary’s Bioethics Professor David Jones talked to the students about the involvement of producing newspapers, preparing them to produce their own publications.

Dr Marije Altorf, a Philosophy lecturer at the University College said: "This has been the first international exchange for the relatively young Philosophy Programme at St Mary’s but it is hoped many more will follow with many of the students from the day expressing an interest to study in each others’ country."
