David Lammy MP Visits St Mary's

David Lammy MP visited St Mary’s University College on Thursday 21st January in order to gain insight into the successful running of a university college.

During the visit to St Mary’s Mr Lammy, who is Minister for Higher Education and Intellectual Property in the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills, met a number of staff members and students, discussing the many successful initiatives at St Mary’s University College including student sport, teacher education and the student run university college newspaper.

As part of the visit Mr Lammy also took part in a radio interview with current undergraduate and SMUC Radio Assistant Manager Tarik Habte. In a recorded interview, due to be aired on Tuesday 26th January at 2pm, Mr Lammy was questioned on why he supported the increase of tuition fees. Tarik, the presenter of the Current Affairs show, also asked him about the graduate internship and placement scheme, as well as how our education system compares to that of the US.

SMUC Radio Station Manager, David Hayes said, "We at SMUC Radio feel that having the opportunity to meet and interview David Lammy is hugely important to our student body. We had the chance to put important topics to the person who matters, from the people who matter."

David Lammy has, among other initiatives, increased the number of Foundation degrees and vocational courses available for students, an area of consistent focus at St Mary’s. Within the University College's School of Education the Minister visited a BA Education in Context group all, of whom have completed a foundation degree for teaching assistants and are working in a wide range of schools. They explained to the Minister the importance of employment based routes into teaching.
