The launch of St Mary’s University College, Twickenham's new student newspaper ‘Simms News’ was marked by a visit to the campus from David Lammy MP, Minister for Higher Education and Intellectual Property recently.
The visit took place on Thursday 21st January 2010, during which Mr Lammy showed a great deal of interest in the creation of the newspaper, as well as finding out more about its creators, current undergraduates Ranako Daley and David Whitehead.
Ranako Daley, a St Mary’s English student said of the venture, "Simms News is an energetic and innovative initiative; the aim of the paper is not only to be wholly student run and student led, its ambitions are to deliver a regular sustainable service not reliant upon individuals but on a secure and reliable infrastructure."
The long term plans for Simms News are to eventually incorporate the scheme into students’ module options and potentially spread readership to the wider local community, therefore improving local communication. Coinciding with the start of Simms News is the Students' Union’s new arrangement with The Student Media Group heralding the new Students' Union website and complete control of advertising
With particular help from Marketing Manager Ruth Mellor and Student’s Union Manager Sarah Carney, Simms News is a bold enterprise offering all students and staff the opportunity to express their thoughts and feelings to their peers in a relevant and informative format.
