Four international athletes from the Endurance Performance Centre (EPC) at St Mary’s University College, Twickenham led a coaching clinic for local school children during the February half term.
The athletes, Steph Twell (Team GB & Scotland), Andrew Osagie (Team GB & England), Mitch Goose (Team GB & England) and Ben Lindsay (Team GB & England) are all students at St Mary’s as well as being elite level athletes.
Steph Twell said today: "The athletics set up at St Mary’s is great. There is a provision at every level and age. The young people can learn about the fundamentals of athletics with SIMMSAthletics and then move up to St Mary’s Richmond Athletics Club when they are a little older, then at University level we have the EPC that is producing results on the track and cross country at the highest level."
The athletes were coaching at the SIMMSAthletics Half Term Coaching Clinic for 5 – 11 year olds.
After a warm up led by the athletes, the young people trained on different athletics skills across sprinting, throws, long distance and jumps. A whole range of drills and equipment were used to help demonstrate the fundamental skills to improve.
The day finished with an awards ceremony where the athletes presented medals to each of the competitors.
