St Mary’s University College, Twickenham's Endurance Performance and Coaching Centre (EPACC) enjoyed success at the 2010 National Cross Country Championships held at Roundhay Park, Leeds last week.
Pre-race favourites Steph Twell and Andy Vernon repeated their recent success in the BUCS Cross Country to win the senior titles. Noteworthy for this achievement alone, it is also the first year that both national cross country titles have been won by students from the same university – a good indication of the excellent endurance programme that exists at St Mary’s.
Steph Twell, three time European Junior Cross Country Champion, won the 8km race in 27:52 beating her nearest rival by an impressive 15 seconds. Jessica Sparke and Emma Pallant, both coached by Mick Woods and working out of the the University College’s EPACC, finished high up the field in seventh and eighth respectively. Faye Fullerton, a former St Mary’s student, finished in fourth position.
The men’s 12km race saw a tussle between Andy Vernon and another EPACC runner, Moumin Geele, with Vernon continuing his excellent form to finish nine seconds in front with a time of 38:01. Steve Vernon, another former St Mary’s student, finished in third position. Jo Harvey completed a successful day for EPACC by taking the junior women’s title.
EPACC Coach Mick Woods said, “The National Cross Country Championship is a great event for both athletes and supporters. Last weekend lived up to all expectations with outstanding performances from all St Mary’s based athletes highlighting the best of British cross country running.”
