Athletes from St Mary’s University College, Twickenham will be competing in a number of major athletic events from Friday 12th to Sunday 14th March, marking the end of an exciting and successful period of winter competition.
Current St Mary’s undergraduate Andrew Osagie will be competing in the 800m men’s event at the World Indoor Championships in Doha, Qatar. The event will mark Andrew’s first senior vest for Team GB at an international event.
Andrew’s coach, Craig Winrow, said: "It’s going to be exciting to see Andrew make his first senior international championship after periods of injury, and be able to have the opportunity to step up to world class."
The World Indoor Championships is the highlight of the indoor season; competitors from all over the world will be in Doha for the televised global championships.
Rose-Anne Galligan, another current St Mary’s student, has been selected to compete for Ireland at the World Indoors, after running as a guest at the Spanish Championships and significantly improving her personal best.
Former St Mary’s student Gemma Turtle will also be competing at the Championships in the women’s 3000m. Gemma achieved her first team GB vest in 2005 running in the European Junior Cross Country Championships whilst studying as an undergraduate at St Mary’s.
On Saturday 13th March several St Mary’s athletes will be competing in the Inter-counties World Cross Country Trial in Birmingham. This prestigious event marks the end of the cross country season and is also the selection race for the World Cross Country Championships to be held in Poland. In the women’s event, current St Mary’s undergraduates Steph Twell and Jess Sparke will be competing for their qualifying places with Mo Farah and Andy Vernon going in the men’s event.
In the junior men’s race St Mary’s 1st year undergraduate Ronnie Sparke will also be competing with a good chance of qualifying for the World Championships. St Mary's Endurance Performance and Coaching Centre coach Mick Woods said: "For the majority of the athletes this will be their last opportunity to race this season with the aim of making the World Championships.
"There are a number of athletes who have an outstanding opportunity to make the team and I am sure we will see a number of St Mary’s athletes running well and qualifying for Poland."
A number of St Mary’s athletes will also be competing in the BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) Indoor Championships in Sheffield from Friday 12th to Sunday 14th March. This will present an opportunity for a number of young athletes to stake an early claim for selection for the forthcoming outdoor championships.
