Ham House and The National Trust in collaboration with the Drama Department at St Mary’s University College, Twickenham are hosting a Birthday Party to celebrate its 400th anniversary on 23rd May.
The celebrations will see music groups, choirs, artists and performers of up to 3,000 people collaborate in the historic grounds of Ham House to create processions and performances in order to bring Ham together as a community.
The parade and community sing along was dreamt up by the St Mary’s drama students in response to one of the many challenges staff at the house set for them: namely to come up with a spectacular way to celebrate the house's 400th anniversary.
Mark Griffin, Programme Director of Drama and Applied Theatre, said today: "The birthday party is the culmination of a year's activities in which Drama St Mary's students, supported by the National Trust, have been the resident theatre company at Ham house – looking at ways in which Drama can work alongside heritage and conservation to re-imagine the space."
He added: “It's a crazy idea to persuade, encourage and co-ordinate the up to 3,000 people who are likely to take part - but the students are rising to every challenge confronting them.”
