Cracknell and Fogle visit CHASES

Olympic gold medallist James Cracknell and television presenter and adventurer Ben Fogle visited St Mary’s University College, Twickenham's Centre for Health, Applied Sport and Exercise Science (CHASES) earlier this month.

Their visit formed part of the preparations for a mountain biking event in the USA consisting of 3,000 miles of off-road biking, most of which will be at high altitude. The biking route will see them travel through an extended portion of the Rocky Mountains through Canada and to the border of New Mexico.

Whilst working with the CHASES team, James Cracknell and Ben Fogle had their current cycling fitness measured and were given invaluable advice on how best to prepare for the event. They received tests conducted in CHASES’s simulated altitude facilities to give them greater insight into the challenge ahead.

Dr Charles Pedlar, CHASES Centre Director and St Mary’s Senior Lecturer said: "The challenge that James and Ben are undertaking is massive.  The sheer scale of the task will test them to their limits, both mentally and physically.

"This was a great opportunity for CHASES to showcase the expertise and facilities we have on the campus.  We can simulate high altitude and measure the physiological effect of exercising under these unforgiving conditions."
