St Mary’s University College EPACC athletes were among those selected for the SPAR European Championships taking place in Barcelona later this month.
Andy Baddeley, a former student of St Mary’s, qualified comfortably in the 1500m. Colin McCourt, currently studying at St Mary’s, recorded an excellent time of 3:37.19, putting him well inside the qualifying standard in Stockholm on Thursday evening.
EPACC coach Craig Winrow, commented: “It has been a delight working with Colin over these last few months and I am very much looking forward to seeing him perform at the championships.”
European indoor 3000m champion and St Mary’s-based athlete, Mo Farah, competes in the 5000m and 10000m races. Mo will be looking to go one better than in Gothenburg four years ago, where he finished second to Spain’s Jesus Espana.
Chris Thompson, a regular visitor to St Mary’s, and Jo Pavey, a local resident, will also compete in the 5000m and 10000m events.
Past student and St Mary’s based athlete Jemma Simpson will run in the 800m race, while St Mary’s graduate, Steph Twell, is selected in the 1500m. Steph will be hoping to return to the form which saw her clock 4:06.10 and an 800m personal best of 2:02.59 earlier in the season.
Andy Vernon, a current St Mary’s student, was unfortunate to miss out on a place in the team, having ran qualifying standards in both the 5000m and 10000m in the United States earlier in the season, times which earned him 5th and 4th place respectively in the current 2010 European rankings.
