Five athletes from St Mary’s University College, Twickenham represented Great Britain and Northern Ireland in the European Championships in Barcelona last week, helping the team to its best ever finish.
Mo Farah, who was one of two original runners at St Mary’s when the Endurance Performance and Coaching Centre was launched in 2001, produced an outstanding achievement in the Championships with double gold in the men’s 10,000m and 5000m.
Jemma Simpson made the final of the women’s 800m, as did Andy Baddeley and Colin McCourt in the men’s 1500m.
Steph Twell continues to progress well in the senior ranks and gained 7th place in the women’s 1500m final with a personal best time of 4min 2.7secs. Steph, a former world junior 1500m champion, graduated from St Mary’s in Strength and Conditioning Science this summer and will remain part of the Endurance and Performance Coaching Centre as she looks towards 2012.
