Current and former undergraduates from St Mary’s University College, Twickenham have achieved success in the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
Steph Twell, a current St Mary’s postgraduate student took a bronze medal in the 1500m final behind Nancy Langat of Kenya. Steph said of the result, "I stayed relaxed after one of the Kenya runners put a block on me."
Charlotte Purdue came fourth in the 10000m, a good run in her first senior championship, but was beaten by an Indian athlete making history in front of her home crowd.
Former St Mary’s student Andrew Osagie qualified for the men’s 800m final in 1min 50.44seconds, competing for Team England along with James MclIroy, a former student competing for team Northern Ireland, who qualified with a time of 1min 50.91 seconds. They will both be running in the men’s 800m final this Sunday.
The men’s 1500m will also be taking place over the weekend with former St Mary’s student Andrew Baddeley and Colin McCourt, who works out of St Mary’s Endurance Performance and Coaching Centre, both competing for Team England.
