The next generation of sports writers are taking their first steps towards employment in one of the UK’s growth sectors as fourteen students begin the new Masters degree in Sports Journalism at St Mary’s University College, Twickenham.
It is the first degree of its kind to be professionally accredited by the National Council for the Training of Journalists and has already received tremendous support from within the industry.
News Associates’ Training Director, Richard Parsons, said this week: “This course is stimulating, engaging and [has] the vital core of an NCTJ qualification, which employers are seeking. It’s not a bad time to be training as a sports journalist, with the Olympics around the corner.”
Dubliner Leigh Walsh, 23, agreed that the NCTJ qualification was a deciding factor in her choice, following a five year tennis scholarship at the University of Utah, where she also worked for a sports broadcaster: “We’re at a university college where elite athletes train and we will get lots of work experience. It’s ideal”.
Course Director Dr Daragh Minogue is delighted with the first intake of students: “I’m overwhelmed by their dedication. They’re already churning out match reports, news features and getting to grips with our new online magazine."
