The Lucky Penny Theatre Company, based at St Mary’s University College, Twickenham, has been collecting stories from Twickenham residents to create a play entitled It’s what they say in Twickenham. It will be performed on Thursday 13th and Friday 14th January at 7pm in Studio 3 at the University College.
The verbatim performance will take word for word accounts from local Twickenham residents and transfer them directly onto the stage to give an accurate and entertaining account of life in the area.
Jack Taylor, an actor in The Lucky Penny Theatre Company and a St Mary’s undergraduate said, “We wanted to give something back to the people of Twickenham and so we decided to stage their stories. They may hear things on the street, in the local supermarket, or read them in the newspaper, but nothing is quite like watching a story being put onto the stage.
"Once the stories started coming, there was no stopping them. Some of the things we have heard were just wonderful and we are excited to show them to the residents of Twickenham over the two night run in January.’’
Interviewees for the production ranged from a 74 year old woman who has lived in Twickenham her entire life to a young man who was born in the area twenty years ago. Television presenter Anthea Turner was also interviewed for the performance as she lived in Twickenham for several years.
Matthew Hahn, a St Mary’s lecturer in Drama and Applied Theatre and the director of the play, said: “I felt it was about time to explore Twickenham a little further. Some of the stuff we heard was very funny and I am sure the audience will be on the edge of their seats the whole time”.
There will be an after show discussion on both evenings where refreshments will be provided. Tickets cost £2.50 on the door (groups of 10 people or more will receive discounted ticket price of £1 per person).
