Local school Twickenham Preparatory School (TPS) is supporting an athlete fund within the Endurance Performance and Coaching Centre (EPACC) at St Mary’s University College, Twickenham, with the aim of helping local athletes in the run up to London 2012.
In the process TPS hopes to ignite interest and enthusiasm amongst pupils for the forthcoming Olympic Games. Pupils will be involved in a number of fundraising activities over the next two years in support of the fund.
On Wednesday 1st December, local athletes including Steph Twell (1500m semi-finalist in Beijing 2008 and 1500m bronze medallist at the 2010 Commonwealth Games) and Charlotte Purdue (10,000m 4th place and 5,000m 6th place at the 2010 Commonwealth Games) will be visiting pupils at the school to talk about their preparations for London 2012.
St Mary's will be providing TPS pupils with updates on athlete progress, personalised by the athletes themselves, and have invited pupils to use the world-class athletics facilities at the University College.
The St Mary’s EPACC was formed by Sport St Mary’s in partnership with Virgin London Marathon and as an England Athletics Coach Development Centre for Endurance, and has attracted some of the country’s top runners, including Mo Farah, Andy Baddeley, Steph Twell, Colin McCourt, James Brewer and Andrew Osagie.
