Professor Wade was a well loved and respected member of the UK and International Gymnastics community as both a national and international judge and as a member of the technical committees of British Gymnastics.
Having completed her training in Education at both Maria Assumpta College and St Mary’s, Pat went on to work in Special Education, teaching at a school for physically disabled and delicate children in Wood Lane. In 1974 she joined the staff of her old college, Maria Assumpta, where she stayed until the college closed in 1978.
Professor Wade then returned to St Mary’s, working in the PE Department. On completion of her PhD on ‘The educational needs of gymnastically gifted girls in England and Wales’ in 1981, she was given a full time post in the Education Department, while continuing to carry out extensive work in international gymnastics. She was later appointed Head of the School of Education at St Mary’s, where as a highly respected educator she viewed the challenges the role presented positively and saw them as a way of raising standards.
Fr Gerard Devlin, St Mary’s Chaplain said: “Pat dedicated her life to serving needs of staff and students of the University College and beyond. She received a Papal Award for her contribution to Education and the Olympic Association presented her with a special Award for her hard work and endeavour over many distinguished years. During her illness she inspired many with her courage and faith, she will be missed by all, but her memory will never be forgotten.”
