Drama Students Win Theatre Bursaries

Laura WatsonTwo Drama students from St Mary’s University College, Twickenham have been awarded funding to have their shows run as part of a youth art festival. Laura Watson, a third year Drama and Physical Theatre student, and former student Tuan Ly have been awarded the bursaries from the Oval House Theatre in Kennington, London.

Two bursaries of £1,000 are made available by the Oval House Theatre each year as part of its ‘33% Festival’. A third of people living in London are aged between 16 and 25 and the festival, running from 12th-22nd January, seeks to celebrate youth art in the areas of film, dance, theatre and photography.

Laura’s production focuses on six young people in London and the feelings that living in such a large city evokes. Laura said of the award: “It’s brilliant! Oval offers something no-one else seems to do – it gives young people opportunities to work in a professional theatre with funding for their own show.”

Professor Trevor Walker, Academic Director of Drama at St Mary’s, added: “The Oval House only offers two bursaries so we're extremely pleased that Laura was awarded one and last year's St Mary's graduate Tuan Ly was awarded the other. We wish them both every success.”
