The School of Education at St Mary's is a successful and expanding school. Provision of teaching programmes is inspected by the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted) on a regular basis, and St Mary's is identified as a high-quality provider of initial teacher training.

PfCE or PGCE

Two pathways are available to graduates who wish to become primary teachers:

  • Professional Certificate in Education (PfCE)
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)

The PfCE requires work at H (Honours) level. The PGCE requires work at M (Masters) level. Both pathways lead to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Applicants are required to register their preferred pathway at the outset of their studies.

Full-Time or Part-Time

Full-time and part-time modes of study are offered.Full-time provision runs over three school terms from September to July, with taught sessions five days a week.

The part-time mode of study has been established at St Mary's for a number of years and is designed to meet the needs of those applicants who would like to become qualified primary teachers but also have to meet other commitments and responsibilities.

Part-time provision runs over five school terms, commencing in April with taught sessions on three days a week between the hours of 11am and 4pm - Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. All school placements are full-time.

Both the full-time and part-time modes of study address the DfES / TDA requirements and standards for ITT and are designed in pursuit of excellent primary teachers. Substantial amounts of time of self-directed study are required. The success rate of Newly Qualified Teachers securing employment is very high.
