While you are supportively guided by teachers and tutors, you are expected to work towards becoming an independent practitioner in a self-motivated and organised way. Attendance at St Mary's-based sessions and throughout the school day while on serial and block school experience is a requirement of this full-time course.
We would emphasise that a professional prerequisite to interview at St Mary's is that candidates should have recently visited an English (or similar) state secondary school, preferably 11-18, for at least two days observation prior to interview. Without such experience (to make sure that you fully appreciate the demands of secondary teaching today, and are making an informed choice) a place on the course, or even an interview, is extremely unlikely to be offered.
You are strongly advised to seek careers guidance before applying for professional training. Criminal Record Bureau and health checks are carried out before final acceptance on the course to ensure fitness to teach.
