Completing the MA Programme

To be awarded the MA, you will be required to complete six taught modules – most of which are assessed by an essay of 4-5,000 words – plus a 15,000-word dissertation. See the Programme Content page for details of these modules.

The teaching for each module will be delivered by way of an intensive weekend of seminars at the Berlin School of English [INSERT LINK TO: http:// berlin.school-of-english.de/] in the Mitte district of Berlin . Berlin has excellent transport links with the whole of western and central Europe, and students find that studying in this way is compatible with the full-time jobs that most have.

Unlike a correspondence course, however, our students in Berlin get a real feeling of working in a group, and for study weekends have a lively social as well as academic atmosphere.

There will be seven study weekends, of which six will be in Berlin and one on the St Mary's campus in West London. The 'weekends' last from Friday afternoon until Monday lunchtime. The weekends will be as follows:

  • 17th - 20th February 2012 (Linguistic Theory)
  • 25th - 28th May 2012 (English Language Description)
  • 14th - 17th September (Sociolinguistics)
  • 7th - 10th December (Language Acquisition)
  • Feb 2013 - (Methodology and Syllabus Design in ELT)
  • May 2013 - (Materials Development in ELT)
  • Sept 2013 - (Research Methods)

Study packs containing the reading you need to do before each of these weekends will be sent to you in advance; support will be provided afterwards on the web, and by phone and email.

You will usually be taught in seminar groups of not more than 15 students. These classes facilitate lively discussion, and the forging of close and supportive academic relationships between students.

The department also encourages an open and friendly relationship relationship between students and staff. Students should feel free to discuss any academic issues with tutors, who are always happy to meet and correspond with students.
