The MA in Applied Linguistics and ELT is the oldest postgraduate programme at St Mary's, having been running for nearly 25 years. The full-time lecturers on the MA in Applied Linguistics are:
Pauline taught EFL in the USA, Japan and Britain before becoming a full-time researcher in the field of second language acquisition. Pauline has published extensively on her specialisms of task-based language learning, classroom interaction, formulaic language and research methodology, and was promoted to Professor of Applied Linguistics for her internationally respected contribution to the understanding of second language learning and methodological tools in spoken discourse analysis.
Her blog, www.BadLinguistics.posterous.com, confronts the woeful misconceptions of language that abound in the media, from gloomy predictions of the end of English to deluded claims of talking prairie dogs.

Michael is a Senior Lecturer in Applied Linguistics, is
English Programme Director and is an Academic Director within the School
of Culture, Communication and Creative Arts. He graduated summa cum laude
in English Literature, and holds a Masters degree in Applied Linguistics
and Education.
He has taught in Taiwan, Japan and Britain. His main areas
of research interest are child language acquisition, and language evolution.
