MA in Applied Linguistics and ELT – Maastricht
Completing the MA Programme
To be awarded the MA, you will be required to complete six taught modules – most of which are assessed by an essay of 4-5,000 words – plus a 15,000-word dissertation. See the Programme Content page for details of these modules.
The teaching for each module will be delivered by way of an intensive weekend of seminars in the Language Centre of the University of Maastricht. Maastricht has excellent transport links with the whole of western and central Europe, and students find that studying in this way is compatible with the full-time jobs that most have.
Unlike a correspondence course, however, our students in Maastricht get a real feeling of working in a group, and for study weekends have a lively social as well as academic atmosphere.
There will be seven study weekends, of which six will be in Maastricht and one on the St Mary's campus in West London. The 'weekends' last from Friday afternoon until Monday lunchtime. The weekends will be as follows (exact dates will be confirmed by September 2010):
- 18-21 February 2011: Linguistic Theory
- 27-30 May 2011: English Langauge Description: Syntax and Phonology
- 16-19 September 2011: Sociolinguistics
- 2-5 December 2011: Language Acquisition
- February 2012: ELT Methodology and Syllabus Design
- May 2012: Option Module
- September 2012: Research Methods and Dissertation Planning
Study packs containing the reading you need to do before each of these weekends will be sent to you in advance; support will be provided afterwards on the web, and by phone and email.
You will usually be taught in seminar groups of not more than 15 students. These classes facilitate lively discussion, and the forging of close and supportive academic relationships between students.
The department also encourages an open and friendly relationship relationship between students and staff. Students should feel free to discuss any academic issues with tutors, who are always happy to meet and correspond with students.
