Programme Content

The MA in Applied Linguistics and ELT concentrates on the relationship between theory and language teaching practice. As such, the course starts with foundational aspects of language theory and language acquisition, which allow for subsequent reflection on more practical modules later in the course. The following modules are compulsory:

  • Language Theory
  • Language Acquisition
  • Research Methods in Applied Linguistics
  • Syllabus Design and Methodology in ELT

In addition, a selection of the following optional modules will be offered:

  • Structural Description of English
  • Sociolinguistics
  • Evaluation and Testing
  • Teaching English to Young Learners
  • ELT Practitioners: Management and Teacher Development

The topic of your dissertation will be decided towards the end of the programme in consultation with course tutors. Students are encouraged to bring their own experiences to bear on their choice of specialisation, in order to produce a piece of work with particular relevance to students’ future careers.
