Programme Content

Up to date, practical, relevant
The modules are constructed to ensure that they are relevant to school and college leaders at all levels and in all phases of Catholic education.

The modular programme allows students to build credits towards the 60 required for a Postgraduate Certificate, the 120 required for a Postgraduate Diploma or the 180 required for the full MA.

Each of the first four 30 credit modules contains two strands to ensure that principles and practice are addressed in each module.

Module 1

Catholic Education
Know the history to build for the future! We explore the development of Catholic education from the early contributions of the religious orders, through Vatican II, to the issues facing contemporary Catholic education. We also explore the importance of community and community building in Catholic education.

Module 2

Leadership and Management
An in depth exploration of current leadership and management theories with a particular emphasis on those theories which are compatible with the gospel values we promote. Of real practical value to TLR holders and senior leaders.

Module 3

Spiritual and Theological Foundations
There are two strands. Theological Foundations builds upon the content of Module 1 to ensure Catholic school leaders can clearly theologically articulate the case for our distinctive learning communities often required in interviews for senior leadership post & headship. Within the Spiritual strand, spirituality and the role of the leader as spiritual leader is also explored.

Module 4

Leadership for Learning
How distinctive should the Catholic school curriculum be? How do we define ‘excellence’ in the context of the Catholic learning community? What is the role of the holders of teaching and learning responsibilities in the Catholic school? How do we respond to the challenges of self evaluation and inspection?

Successful completion of two modules qualifies for the award of a Postgraduate Certificate; four modules for the award of a Diploma.

Module 5

Research Methods and The Dissertation
For the award of an MA, a Research Methods module is studied and a dissertation completed. All assignments and the dissertation allow students to research and reflect upon practice in their own school or college and this work can therefore contribute to school/college improvement.
