Your Questions Answered

Who will the programme be of interest to?

This postgraduate programme will be of interest to all those holding or aspiring to leadership positions in Catholic schools. In today's schools and colleges leadership is widely distributed. The course will be valuable for those aiming for middle management positions - heads of departments, heads of year, subject or years leaders, subject co-ordinators, SENCos and also for those aspiring to senior leaders posts - assistant headteacher, deputy head or headteacher.

The aim is to provide a programme of academic rigour that integrates a Catholic philosophy of education with the principles and practice of school leadership.

Students should, as a result of following the programme, demonstrate greater confidence and competence in articulating and implementing the principle features of Catholic education in their work.

The modules are constructed to ensure that they are relevant to teachers in all phases. The qualifications provide accreditation in support of the professional and career development of teachers in Catholic schools.

Is the course restricted to Catholic teachers?

No, this is an inclusive programme offered to all involved in Catholic education. It is recognised that teachers who are not themselves Catholics, have a significant part to play in the distributed leadership of Catholic schools. The programme may also be of interest and of value to other key members of Catholic school communities, such as school governors, admin team leaders and teaching assistants.

How long does it take to complete the full MA programme?

We recommend that students take two modules per year. This would mean taking two years to complete the four taught modules. One further year would then necessary to complete the dissertation. It is possible to complete in less than three years and students can take 'time out' and take up to 5 years if circumstances require this.

Do I have to commit myself to the whole programme at the beginning?

No. You can build up to (and pay for!) your programme module by module. If your original intention was to aim for an MA but your circumstances change (e.g. you achieve the post you were aiming for!) you can 'cash in' your credits for a certificate (2 modules) or diploma (4 modules)

What if I already have an MA - can I gain exemption from some modules?

Yes, this may well be possible - subject to approval by the appropriate College committee.

Will this qualification count towards NPQH as I plan to apply for this in the near future?

You should be able to gain exemption from part of the programme. Explore this when you apply.

What if I do not live within travelling distance of St Mary's?

Consider the Distance Learning model, OR do you know others in your school or locality who may be interested? We may be able to bring the programme to you. Click to find out more about Centre Based Courses.

Do most students have their fees paid for by their school?

With regard to fees, I find an even split. There are a few schools (farsighted in my opinion!) who invest in their staff and pay the course fees from their INSET budgets. Other schools contribute nothing and the students pay for themselves - investing in their own career and professional development. There is a lot of evidence of course members gaining promotion during the course so I guess they see their personal investment as worthwhile. I think a lot depends on how firmly you see your future in the Catholic system. If you gain this qualification (even just the certificate) it will make a good contribution to your CV, give you an additional referee etc.

How far do students travel to attend the taught sessions at St Mary's?

We do have students who travel from as far afield as Fareham, Watford, Milton Keynes (and one in Sidney, Australia! But, he does not make every session!!!! He moved to Australia after he completed the taught modules!) If are not sure if you can commute to the sessions, it may be a good idea to have a trial run. My suggestion is that you are welcome to attend the first session of module 1 on a trial basis. There would be no cost and no obligation to continue. Give it a try, meet the other group members and see how you feel - at least you would be able to test out how difficult the drive is in real conditions!
