Qualifications and Career Prospects

Qualifications
The course offers a comprehensive programme of journalism training, taught by the journalists at News Associates/Sportsbeat and St.Mary’s University College. Our primary aim is to produce highly qualified postgraduates with a range of specialist and transferable skills who can succeed in journalism and other related professions. The curriculum is underpinned by the core skills in the NCTJ syllabus and reflects current professional practice.

Career Prospects
On successfully completing this course and the work experience, we expectall our postgraduates to secure employment in the industry. Students who pass all their NCTJ Pre-Entry Exams in Journalism are in high demand in the industry. It is the 'gold standard' qualification and the one that most newspaper editors recognise. The Masters degree programme leads to four awards

Postgraduate Certificate In Journalism
Postgraduate Certificate in Sports Journalism
Postgraduate Diploma in Sports Journalism
MA in Sports Journalism

Post Graduate Certificates
In order to achieve a PGCert in Sports Journalism, students will have to complete 60 credits, including the core module in Sports Journalism. Students, who have completed 60 credits, including News Writing and/or Multimedia Journalism with Sports Journalism will be able to receive a PGCert in Journalism.

Post Graduate Diploma
In order to achieve a PGDip in Sports Journalism, students will have to complete 120 credits. You will also receive the NCTJ Pre-Entry Certificate in Journalism and will be very well placed to secure employment as a journalist.

Masters
In order to achieve an MA in Sports Journalism, students will have completed 180 credits. You will also receive the NCTJ Pre-Entry Certificate in Journalism.

Prizes and Special Awards
Each year there will be a University Memorial Prize awarded to the Trainee Journalist of the Year. There will also be an award for the Best Documentary, judged by a panel of radio producers and film-makers. The best student work will be entered for national competitions including the Guardian’s prestigious Student Media Awards, the Press Gazette Student Journalism Awards and the NCTJ student awards.
