St Mary’s has had an established culture of research and scholarship for many years, concentrated in hubs of excellence within research centres and at discipline level in Academic Schools. Research at St Mary’s is valued, encouraged and supported, and undertaking research and scholarship is an integral part of academic life here. A new Research Strategy was developed during 2012 following an extensive period of Strategic Review and consultation with staff from across the institution. This strategy outlines our vision to promote excellence in research and to provide a supportive environment for staff involved in research. In addition we aim to ensure that research underpins our curriculum and enriches the student learning experience in line with our student-focused mission.
Our research is linked closely to our extensive enterprise portfolio, supported by a dedicated Research and Enterprise Development Team, which was established in November 2011. This ensures that our research activity has impact and value outside of St Mary’s locally, nationally and internationally.
We have continued to build our research profile since the RAE 2008 and are planning to submit to additional Units of Assessment in the forthcoming Research Excellence Framework (REF2014) with significantly higher numbers of staff. Many of our researchers have extensive networks with fellow researchers and professional groups both nationally and overseas, which offer opportunities for collaborative working, joint grant applications and access to a wide range of resources and expertise. We welcome visiting scholars from around the world as part of our research community.
St Mary’s has a vibrant and rapidly growing community of postgraduate research students who benefit greatly from the high levels of individual attention provided by our dedicated supervisors. The research students have an active programme of specialist (discipline-based) and generic training and development which culminates annually in a multidisciplinary conference held in June each year.
