“Taking on a PhD course is sometimes compared to the 'loneliness of the long distance runner': gone are the class mates and work on a thesis may seem to go on forever. However, at St Mary's I was blessed with good supervision and genuine interest from many different quarters, usually given in the University College refectory. So the distance was maneagable and the course smooth to run. “
PhD Title: Discerning persons: How Theology can illuminate the contemporary bio-ethical approach to the concept of the person
"Studying for my PhD at St Mary's was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. I had extremely supportive supervision, and found the research committee and administrative team to be really helpful.
"Alongside my own research, I was given the opportunity to take part in the undergraduate teaching at the university, and also got involved in the academic conferences that were hosted within our department. These experiences were really valuable, as they enriched my research project and helped to build my confidence as an academic."
PhD Title: Fashioning the Vampire: Issues of dress and identity performance within the female vampire fan community in both online and face-to-face social contexts
"I undertook my PhD within the field of sport psychology after my undergraduate modules and dissertation raised and enhanced my interest in this area. I conducted my PhD studies whilst lecturing part and full-time at St. Mary’s University College.
"Studying and lecturing at the same time posed some workload and time management challenges; however, with the support of my line-manager, PhD supervisors and fellow staff I was able to successfully complete my PhD and lecturing responsibilities.
"Without help and guidance completing my PhD would have been impossible, so I am indebted to those who assisted me through the process. I found that the PhD experience took over large periods of my life and to be extremely hard work, but it was ultimately rewarding."
PhD Title: An exploration of anxiety interpretation and perceived control
