Support and Medical Information

Support in Halls

Senior Residents
These students are usually 2nd / 3rd years who have lived on campus during their first year and their role is to assist and support you during the time you live in halls of residence. You can seek advice and general information about St Mary’s, they are also there specifically to help new students settle in to college life.

Hall Wardens
Wardens are members of staff who reside in the halls of residence. Their role is to support, guide and assist students living on campus. For example, should a student fall ill and need assistance, the warden should be called. If the warden is unable to assist a student with a personal matter, they will advise the students of the appropriate support services.

Wardens also ensure the health and safety of the halls of residence and ensure that the students do not cause a nuisance or damage. Wardens can issue disciplinary action against students who breach the Terms of Occupancy (PDF File).

Warden / Hall Meeting
Generally each hall or group of halls of residence has a Warden. You will meet him/her in the hall when you arrive (he/she will give you your keys) and at a meeting during the first week, which you must attend.

You will be told about any conditions or regulations which apply to your particular hall and any questions will be answered. You will be required to attend regular hall meetings as advertised within your hall.

Fire Briefing/Health & Safety
All residents are asked to attend a fire briefing during the first few days in residence. Information will also be provided on Health & Safety issues and Personal Safety.

Medical Services

The York Medical Practice at St Mary’s University College offers a daily health service on campus within the University College Health Centre. A doctor attends weekdays for morning surgery (in term time only) and the University College Practice Nurse is also present every weekday.

Emergencies can be seen at the main surgery in the afternoon if necessary. You can expect to receive the full range of services from our Health Centre. Additional Health Service information can be found within the Student Services Handbook in the Student Services section. Resident students are required to register with either the University College Health Centre or a local doctor of their choice.

One advantage of registering with the Health Centre is the avoidance of long queues in local surgeries and in having familiar staff in attendance if there are any medical problems. Medical Registration Forms / information are sent separately.
