Resident Mentors (Hall Wardens)
Resident Mentors are members of staff who reside in the halls of residence and are the first point of contact for students with any issues concerning their accommodation, or who require advice or assistance on personal matters. If your Resident Mentor is unable to assist you with a personal matter, they will advise you of the appropriate support services.
They are responsible for student discipline and welfare in their halls, and their role is to support, guide and assist students living on campus. For example, should you fall ill and need assistance, your Resident Mentor should be called.
Resident Mentors also ensure the safety of halls of residence and ensure that students do not cause a nuisance or damage. Resident Mentors can issue disciplinary action against students who breach the Terms of Occupancy (PDF File). Disciplinary action may result in fines (deducted from your damage deposit), expulsion from halls and/or expulsion from the University College depending on the severity of the breach.
Senior Residents
Senior Residents are students who reside in the halls of residence, helping the Resident Mentors perform their duties. Senior Residents are usually second or third years who have lived in halls of residence during their first year, and their role is to assist and support you – particularly while you're settling in during your first few weeks here, but also throughout your time in halls. You can seek advice and general information about St Mary’s from them.
Hall Meetings
Generally each hall or group of halls of residence has a Resident Mentor. You will meet him/her in the hall when you arrive (he/she will give you your keys) and at a meeting during the first week, which you must attend.
You will be told about any conditions or regulations which apply to your particular hall and any questions you have will be answered. You will be required to attend regular hall meetings as advertised within your hall.
Fire Briefing / Health & Safety
All residents are required to attend a fire briefing during their first few days in residence. Information will also be provided on Health & Safety issues and Personal Safety.
The York Medical Practice at St Mary’s University College offers a daily health
service on campus within the University College Health Centre. A doctor attends weekdays for morning surgery (in term time only) and the University College Practice Nurse is also present every weekday.
Emergencies can be seen at the main surgery in the afternoon if necessary. You can expect to receive the full range of services from our Health Centre. Additional Health Service information can be found within the Student Services Handbook in the Student Services section. Resident students are required to register with either the University College Health Centre or a local doctor of their choice.
One advantage of registering with the Health Centre is the avoidance of long queues in local surgeries and in having familiar staff in attendance if there are any medical problems. Medical Registration Forms / information are sent separately.
All consultations with the doctor or nurse follow the strictest rules of medical confidentiality.
