Changing Your Browser Settings
Follow the instructions below to alter display settings in Internet Explorer and Firefox. This will remove unnecessary styles and images to make webpages easier to read.
Please note that if you are using networked campus PCs you will need to do this on each PC that you use.
Internet Explorer 7
Remove colours & styles specified by the web page
You may need to turn off the style settings set by web pages before you can set your own:
- On the Tools menu (top right-hand side of the screen), click Internet Options
- Click Accessibility
- Under Formatting you can choose from the following options:
- Ignore colours specified on web pages
- Ignore font styles specified on web pages
- Ignore font sizes specified on web pages
- Put a tick in all the boxes required, and click OK.
- You will then return to the Internet options window. Click OK to set your changes as default.
Add your own colours & styles
- On the Tools menu (top right-hand side of the screen), click Internet Options
- Click the colours button in the first window.
- Remove the tick from the box marked Use Windows colours.
- Select colours for text, background, visited links and unvisited links that are easiest for you to see.
- Click OK when you have selected colours for each.
- You will then return to the Internet options window. Click OK to set your changes as default.
Change the Font
- On the Tools menu (top right-hand side of the screen), click Internet Options
- Click Fonts
- Select a font that is easy for you to read. Click OK.
- You will then return to the Internet options window. Click OK to set your changes as default.
Changing the text size
- Click on the Page menu (top right-hand side of the screen), and go to Text size.
- Select a larger text size for web pages to display.
To turn off images on web pages
- On the Tools menu (top right-hand side of the screen), click Internet Options
- On the Advanced tab, scroll down to Multimedia
- Click on Show pictures to remove the tick
- Click on Apply, and then click on OK.
- You will then return to the Internet options window. Click OK to set your changes as default.
Mozilla Firefox 2+
To change your browser settings click on the Tools menu at the top of your browser, then Options. Follow the procedures below:
Change the Font
- Select the Content tab
- Under Fonts and Colours change the default font to a font that is easy for you to read.
- Click on Advanced and untick the box next to Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above.
- Change any of the other font settings to your preferred font
- Click OK
Changing the colour of the text and the background
- Select the Content tab
- Click Colours
- Select Text, and select the colour you would like to use
- Select Background, and choose a colour
- Click OK
To turn off images on web pages
- Select the Content tab
- Remove the tick from the box marked Load images automatically
- Click OK to save your settings
