Disabled Students' Allowances (DSA)

This is an allowance available to UK students. It is to help pay for extra costs you may have to pay as a direct result of your disability or specific learning difficulty. The allowances can help with the cost of a non-medical personal helper, items of specialist equipment, travel and other course-related costs. It is administered through your local authority or, from September 2009, the Student Loan Company (SLC) and to make an application you will need:

  • Proof of disability / diagnostic assessment of specific learning difficulty eg dyslexia
  • An assessment of needs
  • Quotations for equipment / services required

The allowance includes:

  • Specialist equipment allowance
  • Non-medical helpers allowance
  • General allowance

Your local authority / SLC will decide whether you are eligible for the DSA and you will only receive money to cover the cost of the equipment and support that you require.
